The Submarines and Aimee Mann
It seems like an eternity since I’ve been to see a band, and looking back I find that its been a month (URGH). That’s way too long, but the drought is over now with last night’s show by the Submarines and Aimee Mann.
I had completely forgotten that the Submarines were the opening act until I googled for directions to the Carolina Theatre. That was a nice surprise and quite enjoyable. The Submarines are the husband and wife team of Jack Dragonetti and Blake Hazard. If you watch TV (which I don’t), you may have heard their song “You, Me and the Bourgeoise” which is featured in one if the iPhone ads. Along with a drummer (name ?) and a laptop, the group played something less than a ten songs, mostly covering material from their latest CD Honeysuckle Weeks (which I picked up at the show). Good stuff.
I’m not a diehard Aimee Mann fan, but I do find her music enjoyable. I also like what I’ve heard on her new CD @#%&*! Smilers. Aimee had a band of four: drummer, bass guitar, keyboards, keyboards of a different flavor. She played around a dozen songs including a two song encore… and this also included two songs by John Galt (from Winston-Salem) who won the Freeway video contest (see her web site for details).
Unfortunately, I have no pictures. I didn’t learn about this show until tickets had been available for quite a while. I was the very back row of the orchestra section so any chance of a photo with the phone of digital camera was nil.
All in all I would say this was a good show for sliding back into the music scene.
