The iPod blitz hit today and I must say its impressive as are the price cuts ($200 off the price of an iPhone; sometimes it pays to wait).  I like the 160GB iPod Classic, which would be a blessing for me since my music library is well over the 80gb limit of my 5th gen iPod.  Its a pain in the ass to have to selectively chose which tunes to include and which to omit.  I either want something that can only hold a small collection of tunes or I want something that can hold everything… the in-between just doesn’t cut it.

Anyway, the most significant announcement — no, its not the stupid ring tones — is the wi-fi support with the ability to purchase songs directly from the iPod (see this Starbucks scenerio).  Besides Starbucks (which is a very smart piece of marketing) I expect we’ll see iPod/iTunes kiosks in airports, malls and other places where people congregate or have significant downtime.

Ownership of music is the key… temporary sharing (think the idiotic Zune) or subscription models don’t and won’t cut it.  We are collectors by nature.  Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.
