Its nice to read that COBOL is still very much alive.  My first job was as a COBOL programmer.  Lots of people knock it, buts its a very solid language and one that is very readable (which is something truly under valued).  That readability is a big plus when its 3am in the morning and you are trying to deal with a dump.

I also had the privalege of working with Micro Focus on early, early versions of OS/2.  That was some scary stuff, but you could see then that debugging on the PC was where things were headed.

And then there was the discovery that IBM had added pointer support to their compilier.  I remember writing a program that created a linked list… I doubt anyone else had a clue how it worked, but it was a beautiful thing to me.
